THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT WAS TO CREATE AN EMERGENCY STRUCTURE FOR CLIMATE REFUGEES IN EAST AFRICA

A third year project with a focus of designing for a first responder.

During my research I interviewed three workers from the UNHCR Ethiopia and an owner of a non profit called Lost Faces of Humanity Foundation. I learned how the aid workers create and implement strategies to help migrants entering a new country. When migrants first arrive in Ethiopia they stay in an emergency camp along the border for a few weeks. They live in a temporary camp where they are cared for by first responders before they are cleared by Ethiopian authorities.

I found the need for an emergency tent that is easily packed into trucks, transported to the border, and assembled at the emergency location. The current solutions are made of large pieces of wood and fabric which are hard to transport and can easily fail. With the UNHCR Tent, the camp can be quickly organized and set up by the migrants, saving time for aid workers to care for sick and injured individuals.
